Warm weather can have both positive and negative effects on muscle performance, depending on how hot it is and whether you're properly hydrated.
Benefits of warm weather
When the temperature is comfortably warm (rather than extremely hot), your muscles tend to perform better because:
Muscles warm up faster. Warm muscles are more flexible and contract more efficiently.
Improved blood flow. Blood vessels widen, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to working muscles.
Greater flexibility. Tendons and muscles become less stiff, which can improve range of motion.
Reduced injury risk. Warm tissues are generally less prone to strains and pulls compared with cold, stiff muscles.
Downsides of hot weather
As temperatures climb, the benefits can be outweighed by heat stress:
Dehydration. Sweating causes fluid and electrolyte loss, which can lead to muscle cramps and reduced strength.
Earlier fatigue. Your body diverts more blood to the skin to cool itself, leaving less available for working muscles.
Reduced endurance. Your heart works harder to regulate body temperature, making exercise feel more difficult.
Slower recovery. Excessive heat can increase overall physical stress, especially during prolonged exercise.
Tips for exercising in warm weather
Drink water before, during, and after activity.
Replace electrolytes if you're sweating heavily or exercising for more than about an hour.
Exercise during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening.
Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
Reduce the intensity of your workout if you're not accustomed to the heat, allowing your body 1–2 weeks to acclimatize.
Bottom line
Moderately warm weather often improves muscle performance by increasing flexibility, blood flow, and muscle efficiency. However, very hot or humid conditions can decrease performance because dehydration and heat strain make muscles fatigue more quickly. Staying hydrated and giving your body time to adapt to the heat are key to maintaining good performance.
