Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. It happens when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot from the heel to the toes becomes irritated or inflamed.
Common symptoms
Sharp pain in the bottom of the heel
Pain that is often worst with the first steps in the morning
Pain after long periods of standing, walking, or exercise
Tightness in the arch or calf
Common causes and risk factors
Overuse from running, walking, or standing a lot
Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon
Flat feet or very high arches
Poorly supportive footwear
Sudden increase in activity
Excess body weight
Typical treatments
Most cases improve without surgery. Common treatments include:
Rest and reducing aggravating activities
Stretching the calf and plantar fascia
Ice and anti-inflammatory medications
Supportive shoes or orthotics
Physical therapy
Night splints
In stubborn cases, doctors may consider injections or other procedures.
When to seek medical care
You should see a healthcare professional if:
The pain is severe or persistent
You cannot bear weight comfortably
There is swelling, numbness, or redness
Symptoms do not improve after a few weeks of home care
