Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. It happens when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot from the heel to the toes becomes irritated or inflamed.

Common symptoms

  • Sharp pain in the bottom of the heel

  • Pain that is often worst with the first steps in the morning

  • Pain after long periods of standing, walking, or exercise

  • Tightness in the arch or calf

Common causes and risk factors

  • Overuse from running, walking, or standing a lot

  • Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon

  • Flat feet or very high arches

  • Poorly supportive footwear

  • Sudden increase in activity

  • Excess body weight

Typical treatments

Most cases improve without surgery. Common treatments include:

  • Rest and reducing aggravating activities

  • Stretching the calf and plantar fascia

  • Ice and anti-inflammatory medications

  • Supportive shoes or orthotics

  • Physical therapy

  • Night splints

  • In stubborn cases, doctors may consider injections or other procedures.

When to seek medical care

You should see a healthcare professional if:

  • The pain is severe or persistent

  • You cannot bear weight comfortably

  • There is swelling, numbness, or redness

  • Symptoms do not improve after a few weeks of home care
