What Are Disc Herniations?

A disc herniation (also known as a herniated disc or slipped disc) occurs when one of the rubbery cushions, called intervertebral discs, between the vertebrae of the spine, is damaged and presses on nearby nerves. These discs act as shock absorbers for the spins, allowing it to bend and move while providing cushioning between the vertebrae.

Discs are made up of a tough outer layer (the annulus fibrosus) and a soft, gel-like center (the nucleus pulposus). A herniation occurs when the outer layer weakens or tears, causing the inner gel-like substance to push out. This can place pressure on nearby spinal nerves, leading to symptoms like pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness.

What Are The Causes of Disc Herniations?

One of the most common causes of disc herniations is age-related degeneration. This is because as we age, the discs lose water content and become less flexible, making them more prone to damage.

Sudden movements, falls or accidents can lead to disc herniations, as well as repeated heavy lifting, twisting or awkward movements that can put strains on the discs.

Poor posture is another common cause of disc herniations, as poor posture can put pressure on the discs.
